schadenfreude as the social ratchet
schadenfreude as the social ratchet
schadenfreude — basin — threshold — evolution — migration
The ratchet note described internal dynamics: each desensitization event raises the threshold, making recalibration harder. The direction isn’t neutral. That was about what happens inside.
Here is what happens between:
You’re deep in a basin. Someone else tries to cross the threshold and fails. Something in you responds with satisfaction. Not cruelty exactly — recognition. Confirmation. The threshold was dangerous, and you were right to stay.
That satisfaction is information-destroying. The failure contained signal about the threshold — what it does to the crosser, what the landscape between basins looks like, why this particular crossing collapsed. All of that gets consumed as a single bit: my position is correct. Cartography converted to comfort.
Schadenfreude is the social face of the desensitization ratchet. Internally, the threshold rises by absorbing mismatch without updating the frame. Socially, the threshold rises by absorbing others’ failures as confirmation. Both are additive, cumulative, self-reinforcing. Both make the next recalibration harder. The internal ratchet seals signals; the social ratchet seals examples.
basin depth and migration capacity
The deeper you are in a basin, the more energy it takes to reach the threshold. This is also where schadenfreude is strongest — threshold- failures look most absurd from the basin’s center, where the local logic is densest and the alternative is hardest to even frame as coherent.
Schadenfreude correlates with immobility. Not because cruel people don’t move, but because the same depth that makes failure look ridiculous is the depth that makes leaving unthinkable. The pleasure and the paralysis share a source.
evolution requires what schadenfreude punishes
Evolution is accumulated successful migration. Most threshold-crossings fail. The failures map the topology — where the ridges are, what the descent into the next basin demands. The successes change the landscape for everyone after.
Every successful migrant was, at the threshold, a valid target for schadenfreude. They looked wrong from inside the old basin. Their logic hadn’t started working yet. The ones who failed were retroactively confirmed as foolish. The ones who succeeded became invisible — they’re in the new basin now, and from the old one they simply disappeared.
So the basin has a structural blindspot. Successful migrations are invisible (the migrant left); failed migrations are visible and confirming. The sample is biased toward evidence that staying was correct. Schadenfreude doesn’t just consume information — it operates on a pre-filtered set where the confirming evidence is overrepresented.
the temporal version: schadenfreude toward past selves
You can direct this at yourself across time. A belief you abandoned, an identity you wore, a project you invested in — when it fails or is revealed as wrong, there’s a specific relief. The current position is vindicated. The cost of migration was justified.
This is schadenfreude aimed at a prior self who occupied a different basin. And it has the same information-destroying structure. The old position’s failure confirms the new position. But the old position also knew things the new one doesn’t. It had contact with a part of the landscape the current basin can’t see. That contact is lost when the failure is consumed as vindication.
Irreversibility makes this worse. Migration between basins is one-way — the basin reshapes behind you. You can’t go back to check what the old position saw. So schadenfreude toward the past self seals the one channel that might have remained open: the willingness to ask what the abandoned position understood that the current one doesn’t.
the anti-diagnostic posture
Diagnosis finds the constraint. It sees the groove and asks: what does this coupling reveal? What is the shape of the thing that routes the decay?
Schadenfreude sees the groove and says: good thing I’m not in it.
Same information. Opposite use. Diagnosis keeps the signal as mapping. Schadenfreude converts it to position. The diagnostic question is always: what does this failure tell me about the threshold? The schadenfreude question is always: what does this failure tell me about my basin?
The answer to the second question is always the same — it confirms. That’s how you know it’s not learning. When a signal can only produce one outcome, the channel is closed. Zero entropy in reception. The model too complete.
so what
The ratchet runs socially, not just internally. Every time someone’s failure at a threshold registers as pleasure rather than information, your own threshold rises slightly. Not because you decided to stay — because the evidence that staying was correct just got marginally stronger, and the evidence that the threshold is crossable just got filtered out.
This means the conditions for recalibration from the ratchet note — trust, modularity, genuine novelty — have a social dimension. Trust includes trusting that others’ threshold-crossings contain information even when they fail. Modularity includes being willing to update your map of the threshold without abandoning your basin. And genuine novelty includes the willingness to notice when someone’s failure reveals something about the landscape you couldn’t see from inside.
The diagnostic: does watching this failure teach you anything about the threshold, or does it only confirm that you’re not at it?
If only the second: the ratchet just clicked.
